  • Question: Why are all your poems about girls. Are you trying to write from a boys point of view? I think that's really creative and I've never seen that in writing before! You're going to go far with your poetry :) - Anonymous

  • Question: Joe, I have really enjoyed the serious answers you've given fans about your process. It's a breath of fresh air to see someone of your stature take the time to truly answer people. I was wondering if you could talk a little about how you pace your novels. I think you do a great job of balancing action v. quieter moments, plot v. character, slow v. fast, etc. I find it particularly interesting that you can control pace like that while writing a novel without a structure. Thanks! - studiotifo

    Thanks for the kind words.

I don’t worry too much about pacing in the first draft. In the early going, I just want to write some great scenes and figure out the characters.

In successive drafts, though, I allow myself to free-fall through panicky fantasies of the reader losing interest for a few minutes, dropping the book to watch squirrels fight with lightsabers on YouTube, and never coming back. So I try to ask myself every scene, every page, every sentence - are they bored yet? Am I losing them? If I think I might be losing my reader, that shit has to go.

Believe it or not, it’s really that simple. I just keep asking if the reader might possibly get bored and if the answer is “yes,” I worry and curse and poke at the characters with sharpened spears, until the answer changes to “no.”
